Abstract — In this paper we present the Core Elements of the Gaming Experience (CEGE) as a theoretical framework for the user experience of playing video games. The paper briefly presents survey of the status quo of the study of the experience of playing video games. We argue that these approaches fail to provide an objective assessment of the prosaic experience, thus we present the CEGE as a way to understand and study the user experience.
